Wont start
I just bought a second hand 1997 Johnson outboard. I replaced the plugs, got a new fuel tank, got a new fuel primer and line, brand new battery. Now here's my issue...Does anyone know how a motor will act w/o the safety lanyard attached? Mine turns over but wont crank (just spins). I removed the breather guard from the carbs and while turning the key I manually (with a flat head screwdriver) pushed down the butterfly in the carbs. When I did this, she came alive but of course at a high RPM. Keep in mind, the lanyard is not attached. When I remove the screwdriver she kills instantly. Question: I thought the safety lanyard allowed spark to happen? Why will it run with the screwdriver? (there should still be no spark right?) Am I missing something here? Do they have different types of safety kill switches?
