135 evinrude backfire

i have a 1976 135 hp ev.which has develooped a backfire at idle for no apperent reason. replaced plugs. checked for spark. all ok. a mechanic sugested a carb fuel mixture adjustment but cannot loicate where to adjust. any help would be appreciated.
