Oil injection

Have 1996 40 hp evinrude outboard ; can i mix gas & oil or do i have to use oil inj. Tank ;we think we have problems with it but are not sure warning light comes on saying no oil but motor has run & smokes of oil being through it ; need to know how system works thank you lee cat
