Default no spark, 8hp

E8RLCOB (1985) engine estimated to be sitting about 5 yrs, not used after rope start issue, I replaced the pinion gear and engine turns over fine but has no spark, found the "kill" switch and removed the ground, as the switch has continous continuity, still no spark - using a spark indicator, not the plugs grounded.

using Outboard motor service manual, 11th ed from the library.

are there any less obvious safety switches that I am not seeing?

Unfortunately there are no other kill switches. You should start testing the rest of the ignition system.

Default home made air gap tool

tracked the problem to where I had to replace the coil. Instead of purchasing the correct tool (air gap ring) I improvised. From Home Depot I purchased a PVC connector for 4" pvc pipe (inside is more than 4 inches), part number 5936, wraped a layer of aluminum tape on the inside so it fit snuggly on the plate bosses and set the gap using this. worked ok, or I got lucky, cost about $3
