Default 1982 Evinrude 35 hp oil leak

Hey Fella's, this has more than likely been answered, but I have searched the website and am just not used to the search functions of the website yet.

OK, just picked up an older boat with an 1982 35 hp evinrude outboard. Starts, runs, idles, but leaks black oil that is slowly dripping from the propeller area. I have removed the prop and also 2 small bolts inside the propeller shaft. Black oil slowly started to ooze out and the smell was disgusting. I'm thinking burnt due to being so low level and possibly contaminated by water intrusion.

Thoughts, diagrams, post, and general suggestions welcome.

Thanks in advance!

John

cAN'T BELIEVE THIS HAS NOT BEEN ANSWERED, black oil is the exhaust engine oil that did not get burnt. i have had alot of people come to me thinking their lower unit was leaking when it really is just the 2 cycle oil from the engine , are you mixing oil properly? a bad oil injector will do this too

If you have removed the 2 lower unit bearing housing bolts and more oil flowed, then sounds like your gearcase is leaking. The oil can be black and smell if prolong neglect. You will need to find where you are leaking and repair seal.
