1990 25 HP Evinrude - Should it have a carb air filter?

I recently bought a pontoon that came with a 1990 25HP Evinrude outboard model E25EESE and opened the engine to see that the carburetor didn't have a filter on it at all. Is this standard for this type of engine? Any recommendations on how to make sure carburetor and engine stay clean?

Any thoughts/knowledge would be much appreciated?

No air filter on that engine, some of them have a breather box to reduce noise but that's all. as for keeping it running try to stay away from ethanol,always use fresh gas and mix your oil right,, and i like to unplug the fuel line and run it dry if the rig will be sitting for a couple months.

Thank you very much for the input. Your thoughts echo what I was thinking but it's always good to get confirmation from folks who have much more history and familiarity with small outboard engines. Thanks again!
