1974 Evinrude 25hp Handle problems....

I can't get the handle to lock into place. I already tried tightening the srew on it but it still doesn't work. I know there in a spring inside of it, Do you think that could have something to do with it ? Please Help ASAP !! I need to get this thing on the water.

It is very posible. I am uncertain exactly what handle or spring you are referring to.

Sorry the handle I was referring to is the Tiller Handle for the Motor. I have a diagram that shows there is a spring insisde but I dont know if that would have anything to do with the handle not locking into a run or start position.

No that spring should not keep the handle from returning back it neutral.

I can get the motor in & out of gear. Its the trottle handle on the tiller that wont lock into a start or run position. Ive got it to lock into position once & when I did it ran perfect but now the handle just free spins so idk what the problem with it is.
