225 E-Tec Check Egine Light

'06 225hp E-Tec Saltwater Series

The check engine light came on the other day on the lake. It runs fine as ever. Not sure what caused it, maybe some of that crap fuel they are selling us these days. Can I get a data cable and check what caused the fault myself? What software is required?

I just don't trust marine dealers, take it in for a check engine light caused by crappy fuel and they tell it needs $1000 service or some crap.

BTW, I just had the 3 year service done last year and the engine has maybe 12 hours on it since then.

Well I did some research and found out which cable I needed and the software. Does anybody know if the software can report and reset the check engine light. I understand that the software only has full functioning ability when it is activated by a dealer with an Evinrude issued key code.

Mine can, but I think mine only works up to like 03 or so. I have cleared codes as well. If you are any bit handy, and have a little confidence in yourself I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately Evinrude/Johnson (BRP) will not allow any retail or parts house to sell the factory diagnostic equipment.
