Default evinrude 150xp

I just got this pontoon that is a 1988 and it has a 150xp outboard motor. Not familiar with these. The guy I bought it from did start it up but was very hard to start but once it did it sounded good but smoked. The gas has stabilizer but has been in there a year. He said once it gets started it will start right up the rest of the day. Also I have read that you should replace the waterpump every 2 years is this true. What else should I look for and replace. I have ordered a manual. Thanks for the help.

im fairly new to baot motors, but i do knoe that it is true you should replace the impeller ( water pump ) every two years. about the smoke, have you drained all the gas out of the tank and put fresh in? if it has been in their a year you should do that, it could be smoking becouse their is to much oil in the mix, but bad gas isnt good for it eather.. the starting problom could be a few things, it might not be getting good spark, you could need a new ignition coil as well. but thats just an amature guess.

Your coils are fine. It would not hurt to replace the gas and sprk plugs though. As far as the water pump yes I would agree to replace them every 2 to 3 years depending upon where you are using them as if you are in the river or running close twon or in the sand. The starting problem could be just not proper starting proceedure.
