loud bang, no start.

1987 40hp evinrude. their was a loud bang while running, and the engine quit. i can turn the flywheel by hand in neutral almost all of the way around in either direction, but it gets stuck just as it is about to compleat a full rotation.

in neutral the prop dose turn freely.
i can turn the flywheel in forward and reverse also but get the same resalt.

everything apeered to be working smoothly before the incedent, even the water pump.

Sounds like the engine is blown. You will need to dis***emble to find out what exactly broke and if it is repairable.

the flywheel now turns freely, and i am getting compression in both cylinders. however i havent done anything to the engine besides move it off of the boat and remove the spark plugs.

prehaps it was a stuck pushrod?

That explains the load bang you heard !
Well at least you knwo what the problem is ...now you havs some winter months to fix it !! (depending where you live !)

the weather is great here in florida
too bad i cant be on the water right now.

looks like i can get a new piston and rings for about $80.00
