  • Motor dead stop / restarts after 5mins

    Hi folks,

I'm at a loss here. I have a 2000 200hp evinrude FICHT RAM injection motor that cold starts fine. It will run fine at 4000 -4500 revs for 1/2 hour but when we come back into the harbour and drop back to 2300 - 2500 revs the motor cuts out without warning ( just like a key off ).

When you go to restart, all the standard dash lights fire up, but there is no crank. Tried everything to start, wiggling key etc, checking manoverboard switch etc.

If I drop anchor and wait for 5-10mins it cranks over and fires up like there's never been an issue.

This has happened twice now. I have replaced the key switch as there is no hard or soft logs on the computer report and I can not think of what else can stop the engine while going and then not allow it to start / at least crank.

All ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This may be the same issue I had last year.

      2000 225 FICHT
It would start, and run fine for a while, but then die without warning. I think three light were lit on the gauge. After a few it would start up with no problem, only to repeat the process.

It turned out to be the PTC(sp) in the EMM. Not a user repairable item. It's some type of mechanical temperature device inside the EMM not connected to the electronics of the engine. When it thinks the EMM is overheating, it kills the power to protect it. As the PTC ages and/or cycles, it gradually thinks the EMM is hotter than it really is, eventually leading to engine shutdowns.

DFI identified the problem over the phone, and fixed it through my dealer.

I UPS'ed it to DFI in Alabama.

They fixed the problem, and went through the rest of the unit. My dealer reinstalled it. Around $800.00 I think. My freight money down, free freight back.

The engine started easier, ran quieter, and was trouble free until Dec 16, 2013, when #3 injector quit.

          I'm looking for one now.
