    1977 35hp evinrude, no power from ignition

    Hello, I have a 1977 Evinrude outboard 35hp, It's not getting any power to the silinoid I think. It started just fine these past 2 yrs since I put NEW power pack, coils, starter, ignition and now a new silinoid, until now. I turned the key and it started up I turned it off and turned the key again and nothing....
    I checked all wires and are in good looking condition, fuse inline of silinoid is good but has blown out twice... I have had the ignition send a serge to started like it had power but never turned over. since then nothing at it's like there's no power going to silinoid for starter.
    I can start the motor and get it running by touching power wire from batter to positive on starter, it starts up and stays running.... But while starting it that way I noticed that power wire to battery was a bit HOT... ?

    If any one can give me any advice I would appreciate it...

    Hey what does the MES Regulator outboard Rectifier do? I cleaned all connections that this is connected to.

    There is are neutral kill switches on some models that will keep the starter solenoid from engaging. You should also check power at the solenoid with the key in the start position.

      Hello, I'm not sure how to check for this , I know someone said to disconnect
      The black & yellow wire from the ingnition and still theres no power
      no nothing when I turn the key....
      Any tips as to how I check the power at the solenoid... Thanks, Jason

        The solenoid has 4 wires, 2 large (one to bat, other to starter motor) and 2 small wires. one of the small wires is ground the other is power on start from switch. You can test solenoid by manual supplying power to the small wire, if turns over you are not getting power from switch. If solenoid is good, start testing power at the key switch.

          I will try that power to the small wires. Both small wires
          Are white , 1 post is "I" the other 1 is "S" . Which one should I put the power to, Don't want to burn nothing up....

          What do you recommend on how to check for power at the ignition ?..

          I've learned alot from ppl on here and thank everyone...

            The S should be start (power). Use a test light at the switch, verify power to the switch, verify power on, verify power at start. Those are the important ones.

                Hello, I put power from hot wire of battery to the "s" on silinoid with key switch in the on position and got nothing. This silinoid is new I purchased it. Any ideas now I'm stumped.

                  Verify that the other post is grounded (on the solenoid, use test light). If there is power and ground to the solenoid and still does not work, then it is defective.

                    Hello, I was needing some info about a test light I have no idea as to what this is or how to use it. Is this a simple item and can I purchase this at my local automotive parts store?How do I use this item once I purchase it.

                      Hello, I went to my parts store , they sold me a "6-12 volt circuit tester" " test with power on tester"
                      I checked for power at switch and yes I have power there.
                      I checked for power at the silinoid "s" switch and nothing. The "I" switch same thing nothing= I connected the alligator clip to power wire from battery and then the prob to the "I" switch nothing. And the opposite for the "s" switch...

                      I disconnected the main line coming in engine housing from the key switch and checked for power at the contacts inside the only power I found was the big red wire, nothing else was hot, yes the key switch was turned to the on position...

                      I'm not sure if my wires are on the correct post in the key switch? could you check these and see if they are correct or if I need to change them around?

                      high post M ; black/yellow wire
                      flat post I ; no wire
                      flat post A ; white wire
                      flat post C ; purple/white wire
                      flat post M ; black wire
                      flat post B ; battery wire / red/purple wire

                      Please let me know what any one thinks I am lost as what to do next... Thank you , Jason

                        You cannot test the main harness with it disconnected. The wires on the starter solenoid are only activated in the start position. If those wires were in those positions from the factory, then do not move. If that is how you checked it, then check all your kill switches, like neutral safety switch (maybe two, one in cowling, one in control box. Safety lanyard switch if it has one.

                          Starter problems

                          You need two people to check. The key has to be held in the start position as it is spring loaded. My problem is in that position & pressed in the choke does not work & does not start,
