2004 250HP not going into gear

Have 2004 Bombardier 250 HP Evinrude, ran out OK yesterday but had a problem coming back as we could not get it to go into gear. Does not appear to be a cable issue as the throttle and shift levers in engine appear to be responding, but no distinguishing thump into gear in either forward or reverse, only throttle works. I am guessing that the shift rod was not properly reconnected at the last service. Where and how would we find this connection or do you think it is something else?

Check shift cable connections at engine and shift rod from gearcase is connected to shift linkage on front of engine, can remove cable and shift controls and check that cable does move back and forth, shift engine by hand and spin prop to see if engaging into gear.
