  • early 80s (82) 5hp Yachtwin

    Hi all
I'm new here and come seeking advice
I've had a fair amount of experience with seagull outboards of various shape and sizes and currently use on as an auxilliary on my wee sailboat.
However I'm looking for a little more power and less noise.
Tomorrow I'm going to look at an early 80s 5hp Yachtwin
It hasn't been run for a couple years as it was donated to a local sailing club and sat.
It's attractively price for a "project" and seems to be all their
I'm going to check the compression(by feel) and visually inspect it.
I'm not sure if they have a tank and hose to start it with.
I was curious if there are red flags I should look out for and generally what are the sorts of maintenace that should be done to this vintage Evinrude and what are the common failings?
    Thanks a lot

Those older outboards are usually good to go. You may need to repair the carburetors from sitting though.

      Actually 1968 Angler 5hp (5802B)

      Ooops it's actually a 68 5hp Angler
Looks really clean under the hood
Stored inside at a local sailng club for the last 2 years
Anything I should do before I try to start it?
I heard these are 50/1 but runnning them a little fat (40 /1) can't hurt
Should I replace the water pump unit? I heard it's rubber

Yes, for your first tank would not hurt to run a little oil rich. A full service would not hurt. (spark plugs, lower unit lube, fuel filters, water pump, etc) Water pumps are rubber and should be replaced. Chances are the proper procautions were not taken when placed into storage, so will likely need to remove and repair the carburetor.
