  • Engine troubleshooting-- unable to maintain RPMs above 2000

It all started last summer when i was on my way in from a fishing trip, doing between 4100- 4500 RPM about to head into the inlet and return to the bay. Without warning the motor started to cut itself down to 2800 RPM then suddenly jump back up to 4100 RPM then again loose and gain back RPMs. Not wanting to do harm to the engine i cut it back to under the magic 2000 RPM mark and the engine had no problem holding its RPMs as long as i stayed under 2000 RPM.

When i had my marina look at it they told me that there was a pebble or some sort of small debris that was sucked into the intake vlave and was jammed in the valve not allowing it to close. So they told me the engine was getting too much raw water in and thus causing it to run too cold. They charged me a few hundred and reported it was fixed.

This summer i decided to move locations and drove the boat about 40 miles up the coast to its new home in Sandy Hook, NJ. During the drive i was between 4100- 4500 RPMs for about an hour with no issues at all. There was sign of RPMs not holding the the throttle was responsive as it should be. THEN i took it out for a fishing trip a few days ago and the engine started doing the same thing as the summer before. Once i was in the 3300+ RPM range, i was unable to maintain it as it fluctuated down to 2000 and up again and down again. Just like last time, i cut it back to under 2000 RPM and it ran fine. I also noticed that i was getting an increase in smog coming from the engine at all RPMs.

I believe that there is a sensor somewhere that is malfunctioning. I think the sensor goes in and out of malfunctioning and when it malfunctions the computer cuts the engine down to 2000 RPMs as it is supposed to but then the sensor starts working properly and suddenly i regain my RPMs and thus creating the "bucking" sensation in power. I am not sure sure if the smog is a sign that the sensor has to do with the oil or if I'm just noticing every little thing.

If you have any insight or thoughts as to what can be causing this i would greatly appreciate it! By the way, the engine is a 2009 200 HP Evinrude E-tec. Thanks

The pebble would only hold the themrostat open, making it a cold start. After the engine started it will open anyway. In reallity no one can figure these new units out.Or maybe just me.They are just way complicated.I have a thread below asking if anyone knows what an emm is?Even the guys that post emm problems have not replied,so far.IM me and I will tell you what I think it is.
