i have an '87 Evinrude 110 v4 that keeps kicking out of gear at slow-no wake speed. seems to be fine at 1/2 - full throttle. any ideas? ran great when i put it away last season.

Check shift cable adjustment that it's going all the way into forward gear, check lower unit oil for metal or water in oil, if so then may have damage inside gearcase. -

have you had the gearbox off for impeller change ?
if so did you check the length of shift rod from the hole in the top to the gearcase in neutral ?
could be its not at spec height.

Check fluid levels in the gearcase. The fluid not only lubricants but also aids in keeping the gears together via presure.Comment
