  • 1997 25 hp bogs out

Hi hopefully someone on here can help me with my issue, my 25 hp motor runs great in the driveway hooked up to ears for water, put it the water start it no problem reverse works fine as soon as i put it in forward and give it fuel it begins to get speed then bogs out and stalls if i don't let off. Carb is clean, fuel is new, i took the cover off and covered the air intake on the carb with my hand and it picked right up and went well. i really cant figure out what the problem could be. any input would be gratefully appreciated, need to get out fishing

A pa$$ageway within the carburetor is clogged. Remove, clean, and rebuild as needed.

Well I've redone the carb again to no avail, replaced the fuel line and bulb, new tank and have the exact same issue

If you cleaned that carburetor exactly as you did previously... remember that Einstein had a saying about that.

The fact that covering the carburetor throat with your hand results in having the rpms increase proves that fuel is within the carburetor BUT is not flowing through the carburetor fuel pa$$ageways. You're overlooking something within the carburetor.

The usual cause is a clogged bra$$ high speed jet. This is located horizontally in the bottom center portion of the float chamber, held in place via 1/4x20 threads. Clean this jet carefully with a piece of single strand steel wire as solvent just doesn't do that job properly.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

Lol it actually was a "marine mechanic" that did it the first time, I dis***embled it took the jets out, blew some compressed air through all the ports as well as carb cleaner.... Even made sure they were the right jets 51 D on the high speed jet and a 30 up top... Im starting to think the fuel pump isn't feeding it enough fuel at the higher rpm

Have someone pump the fuel primer bulb (acting as a manual fuel pump) to prove or disprove that suspicion... that could very well be your problem.

Should the primer bulb go flat and stay that way = Fuel Restriction.

Sounds like you did a good thorough job on the carburetor cleaning.

                  bogging

I have a very simular problem on a 88 150 johnson years ago.. I fooled with it for weeks and weeks.Even pumping the primer buld did nothelp. I finally put a fuel pump on it and all was well------evidently the fuel pump was only pumping enough fuel to run the morot as lower speeds.
