2008 225 Etec over heating

  • 2008 225 Etec over heating

    Hi all,

    I hope I can get some help here. I own a 2008 Etec 225 and it is over heating when I am over 4500rpm. Engine has great water pressure.

    Steps taken so far...

    - Replaced impeller
    - Replaced thermostats
    - Replaced all popet valve parts

    None of these parts showed any wear when I replaced them.

    I take off and get up on plane and within 5 min I receive the overheating alarm.

    What else could be causing this?

    On that model, I think the overheat alarm (constant steady beep) is the same as a fuel restriction. If the engine isn't obviously overheating, check for a fuel restriction.... fuel primer bulb being drawn flat?

        I will need to check the priming bulb next time I take the boat out. An additional bit of information is that when I receive the over heating alarm and I back down on the throttle there is what looks like steam that comes out of the exhaust for a brief moment.

        Does that point to the same issue?

          Steam would only be caused by water entering a very hot area.

          If you have used this engine on the same boat in the past and have encountered no overheating problem until recently.... I would suggest you drop that lower unit to recheck your work.

          Possible errors: Tip of impeller pinched and ripped off... Goofy O Ring seal slipped out of the channel... Foreign debris between impeller housing and plate... Water tube improperly inserted, being pushed upwards. (These things do happen!)

                  Update

                  Bought the diagnostic kit and hooked up the motor while testing it on the water. In less than 5 minutes at any rpm above 2000 the motor logs a code 40 fault "Engine Temp ABOVE Range Low Speed (Port or Single)". The temperature logged is 185 degrees. Swapped the temperature sensors and got the same results. Took out all spark plugs and all look to be in good condition without signs of humidity. Re-checked the thermostats, pressure relief valve and dropped the lower unit to check the water pump. No problems at any of these points.

                  Will be performing a compression test and leak test this coming weekend. At a loss as to what else it could be if these tests turn up nothing.

                    Update

                    Compression test was normal. Dropped the lower unit to re-check the water pump and all looks good. Bought some clear hose and connected it to the pressure relief valve to check for air. None found. Byp***ed the pressure relief valve with hoses by connecting to thermostat intake and looping to the opening below. Took the boat out and it did not give the overheating alarm but the engine ran at approximately 177 degrees on the starboard site and 170 on the port side. Went back out this past Saturday and added a water pressure sensor to the engine. Ran the boat at different rpms to get readings from the water pressure sensor. At 5000 rpm I am getting 13psi and the port side is running at 172 degrees and the starboard side is running at 156 degrees.

                    The higher temperatures have subsided but the starboard side is still running to high. I am thinking it might be a faulty temperature sensor as before we swapped the temperature sensors the port side was the one that was running hotter.
