    Given an outboard to see if I can fix it.......

    Hi all,

    Looking for some experienced minds to offer some advice. I have been given a evinrude 70hp (1978 I think) as my buddy doesn't have time to fix it himself and he has no mechanical inclination so offered it to me.

    He said the engine has been in storage for around 2 years and when he went to start it earlier this year he noticed a wire was "corroded". I have attached a picture of said wire and wonder, firstly, is this an easy enough fix And 2 as its been still for so long will the engine even be able to turn over?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

      Anything can be fixed. Soldering a new wire onto a pin or socket or the original wire depends on your degree of expertise.

      You are the only one that could know if the engine will turn over or not... grab the flywheel and see if it turns/rotates. If you're asking if the engine will start and run... I have would have no idea unless I were there.

      The carburetors will probably need cleaning and rebuilding due to sitting. That RED wire I see is not a factory thing. What is the model number of that engine so that I can pinpoint what it is?

        You might want to post more photos of all sides of the motor. If the flywheel spins freely then there is little to no compression and could need more work than you think. That red wire running across? Where does it go? But you can solder those connections or buy new pins and connect them. Hope this helps.

          If it ran ...

          when they put it away, why wouldn't it run now? As the others have said, see if you can rotate the flywheel (by hand, with a wrench on the nut, with a bar on the teeth, whatever ...).

          If it turns, but offers resistance, like winding a spring, that's good

          If it turns, but drags and feels gritty, that's bad

          If it turns easily with the spark plugs in place, that is also bad (low compression) ...

          You might want to remove the spark plugs and spray some Tri-Flow in each cylinder. I have found it loosens gummy rings and frees things w/o major harm of any sort.

          Don't try to run it unless you have "muffs" and a water supply. Just a short bit w/o water and the water pump will be toast. Then you'll be into the lower leg too ...
