Hi guys. I am new to the forum and I need some help. I have a 1989 150XP. My father had the whole engine rebuilt from the ground up about 5 years ago and only took it out once then ran stabil through it and it sat till he gave it to me last week. The question I have is after going through the engine and checking everything I was told I needed a new solenoid. Now when I try to crank it the solenoid just clicks. The starter is brand new so is everything else. What could be the reason it is not engaging the starter. Thanks guys.

A$$uming you can turn the flywheel over by hand, that is the engine is not locked up, see the following.

Checking the starter itself.... With a good known fully charged battery, attach momentarily good known jumper cables directly to the electric starter. If the starter cranks the engine over properly, then obviously the starter is okay.

The usual cause of the problem you describe is a voltage drop to the starter solenoid. This is normally caused by either a loose cable/wire or a tight but dirty connection at some cable/wire terminal.

One by one, including the battery terminals, remove the cable/wire terminal ends from what they're connected to, clean the terminal ends and also the components they're attached to thoroughly, then tighten them with a wrench or pliers... not your fingers if wing nuts are encountered.

If the problem still exists, feel the cables their entire length. If you find a extremely hot one, that cause is normally due to the cable being corroded internally (if the terminal ends are clean and tight).
