  • Fuel Issue

I have a 1978 Evinrude Model 55875S, 55hp that seems to run well. I question my gas usage, as I use 3-5 gallons in a typical 12 mile loop on my 20ft pontoon boat with average weight (2 dogs, 2 people, minimal gear). I noticed when docked, there was a gas ring around my motor, although I did not see dripping. For the environment I have my concerns, as well as my fuel usage.

    Your thoughts?

I had the lower unit, gear case, and water pump replaced. The mechanic did a full tune up, I believe he said on two carbs. A new fuel tank (portable) and fuel line were also added.

have you owned the boat long enough that you have fuel use history? 3-5 gallons for 12 miles seems like an awful lot. Is the fuel ring always there? Sounds like a leak to me. Maybe it only leaks when it's running. That would concern me.

No, I purchased the boat 2 years ago and it's been in the shop about 20 of 24 months (financial and logistics issues). This is the first season of reliable use, so I'm looking for some guidance. The motor runs well, but I am concerned about the fuel usage.

Early in the season we found out one pontoon had a leak and took on lots of water, adding to the weight. We have repaired that issue. The boat feels heavy. The previous owner did a rebuild with all new new decking.

seems like a lot of gas but I have no pontoon boat experience. I tried to estimate fuel usage on my 20' Dusky with a 225 Evinrude and it's difficult. My estimate is that I've gone about 50 miles on 15 gallons of gas. If I'm wrong I've gone farther. Every trip includes about 40 minutes of idling due to time in a no wake zone going and coming back. Most of the rest of the time is 4500-5750 RPM. I also know my prop is to small because I can't run at WOT. I have a new prop with 2" more pitch that will be on my next trip.

I understand the prop issue. I'm considering something new as well. I think I can improve my fuel usage. I'm not sure if the last run was better as I reconnected my fuel line at the motor end. I did not immediately see any fuel drips on the water, and after my short run, it appeared that I did not use much gas.
