  • Evinrude E25 ECOC 1985 click on start

Hi - most of the time my 2 stroke outboard works fine. Unfortunately now, it's developed a 'click' and won't start for a few turns of the key. The starter motor turns around one tooth, clicks ... and that's it. I've tried gently tapping to loosen, played around with the cables and eventually it just starts. There doesn't seem to be any loose cables although I'll strip down and check everything. The battery is heavy duty and was fully trickle charged a few weeks ago. Just to ask if there's any other thoughts, ideas? I'm a bit of a novice but can follow if it's step by step

***uming your battery is good and fully charged...........

Remove all cables and wires ***ociated with the starter (one at a time) and clean the terminal ends of the cables/wires and the components they attach to.... this includes the actual battery terminals. A tight but dirty connection will result in a voltage drop and the problem you're experiencing.

When this problem appears, manually turn the starter a 1/4 turn. If that causes the starter to kick in, suspect a dead spot on the armature commutator... could just be dirty.

After doing the above, if the problem still exists... check the solenoid ground wire and the safety switch which will be either in line with the solenoid ground wire or the control box.
