I have a 1978 evinrude 175,I would like to change my lower unit to a newer unit. There is a 1980 unit that I'm looking at,but I would have to change the end of the shift shaft.anybody think I could have threads cut on the end of the 1980 shift shaft to make it work?

In a$$uming that your 1978 model is the one that has a barrel like connector screwed onto the top portion of the shift shaft......................

Since the later model shift rods have a critical measurement adjustment a$$igned to them, the top threaded portion of the new lower unit shift rod (in neutral) must be exactly like the one on your 1978 model. That is............

Whatever the measurement is on your 1978 model in neutral, from the top of the lower unit surface to the tip of the threaded shift rod..... the new lower unit's shift rod measurement must be identical.

Also when cutting threads on the new shift rod.... since the barrel is screwed all the way down, then backed off just enough to have it aligned properly.... it is critical to have the exact same amount of threads on the new shift rod.

That's my line of thought. Now, if it will actually work is for you to find out. Keep us updated.
