I installed a water pump in my 1988 20hp E20CRCCA this weekend. According to the instructions the impeller housing spacer should have been installed with the tabs “facing forward”. The picture in the diagram wasn’t clear but almost seem the tabs on the spacer were facing opposite the propeller (facing the tiller throttle side) which is how I installed it. When I went to reconnect the lower unit I couldn’t get it to close completely. There was about a ¼” gap. I tried repeatedly to reattach to no avail. I finally removed the spacer and turned the tabs facing the propeller and the lower unit attached the motor with no problems. Did I do this right???
