  • 15 hp Evinrude running hot

I picked up a late 70's era 15hp Evinrude from a friend, and it's had a hard life. He was basically going to trash it, and I love tinkering with old Evinrudes (I have several), so I took it. I've only run it a few times, and it seems to be running hot. What I mean by that is it's peeing water fine, and seems to run fairly smooth, but the shaft covering from just above the water level upward gets extremely hot...too hot to touch after just a few minutes. I'm thinking I have a problem in the lower unit? Bearing or gear maybe? I'm not a mechanic...I'm a tinkerer who can do basic things. Any thoughts on where to begin looking would be appreciated.

    Running Hot

Hey, sounds like you are not lubrication the bottom section of your engine. Look in the manual to see if it has a water port down there. I had a similar problem, but I found out I needed my impellers change. You may have a similar problem.
