Hello, I am having a lot of problem with my electric starter on my evinrude motor. It spins on itself when I press the electric start button, but it doesnt go up to actually start the engine. I just bought a brand new starter on Ebay and replaced it, having the same problem (even worst, before could just give a little hit on the starter with pliers and it would go, last week I had to start the motor 3 times with the emergency rope.) part # is 583473 or 778991. I am wondering to think if the battery wouldnt be the real problem as its on its 4th years now and old starter been working fine before this year. (battery never stays outdoor in the winter, is always fully charged before a fishing trip).

Is gear on top of starter rusted or stuck? If not free to move up, it may not engage to crank motor. But new starter should have worked.
Also, has anyone cleaned or disconnected any wires at battery, maybe one was not reconnected? Or possibly connections are dirty, limiting amperage needed to crank? Check terminal ends for corrosion, may also limit amperage needed.
Can take battery to auto parts store to test. If bad, replace.

Clean battery cables on both ends, check the battery make sure it is good. Take ohms reading on the battery cables when they are disconnected from the battery and the motor. High reading bad cables.Comment
