Lower unit interchange years

Can someone tell me what years will interchange lower units. I have a 1980 35hp evinrude. Will a 1978 interchange? If not, what years will? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately the gearcase ***embly for the 1980 35hp is only good through 1981 and only the 35hp.

Thats a bummer. Motor is kicking out( feels like hitting a log) at high speed. Looking at the repair manual, this looks like a pretty tough job for a back yard fisherman mechanic. Any recommendations?
